“My painting does not come from the easel.”

–  Jackson Pollock, 1912 – 1956, American, painter, abstract expressionist

More

Jackson Pollock 4Pollock was introduced to the use of liquid paint in 1936 at an experimental workshop in New York City by the Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros. He later used paint pouring as one of several techniques on canvases of the early 1940s, such as Male and Female and Composition with Pouring I. After his move to Springs, he began painting with his canvases laid out on the studio floor, and he developed what was later called his “drip” technique.

He started using synthetic resin-based paints called alkyd enamels, which, at that time, was a novel medium. Pollock described this use of household paints, instead of artist’s paints, as “a natural growth out of a need”. He used hardened brushes, sticks, and even basting syringes as paint applicators. This literally fell out of my fingers

Hello, I am back. This goofy program called finnger paint just lets your hands roll over it.

Here I am, sorta

I’ve been out of action by reason of a dead iPad and a fall.

-30-

Tuesday and I am going outside to sit and paint.

I fell the other day and it is starting to catch up with me. Good thing I see my pain specialist tomorrow. I get trigger point shots every six weeks wherever it hurts the most. I’m thinking hip, hip replacement soon. Oh well, I already have three new knees, one new shoulder and a part of my back replaced. What’s a little more titanium? Here’s one I gave to my pain clinic. New York Spine and Wellness in Dewitt, NY, by the way.

Yesterday, I painted on my iPad a Catticus upsidedownus

I may have forgotten to upload it. The old brain…

Today I have edited the drawing a bit. Not an easy job to paint the cat in your own lap. And, she (Harry) is black and white. I would love to know what you think.

My friend Mark Bialczak asks questions. I think I will too. thanks, Mark.

What do you like to write?

What do you draw?

Why do you blog?

Thank you

I lied. The sun is so warm

Sunday

i have just one thing to write this morning. Writing this blog and receiving feedback from everyone who reads this or follows me is sustaining and improving my life. Thank you to all of you. Now I’m going outside to paint.

Thank you

A Haiku About My Cat Using Profanity

Perfect. Wish I had written it. Our cats walk all over me all night, changing nap space, I guess. Sigh.

S. Jordan's avatarCease, Cows

In tenth grade you say to your friend Katie, “Let’s be anorexic.” You are joking, but not really, and she’s looking straight at you and she says, “Okay.” Katie takes to it like a house on fire, but you are weak. You break and eat after dark with shaking fingers in the cold light of the refrigerator. Katie pares her daily intake down to an apple and a can of tuna until she decides she’s enjoying the tuna too much, and then she drinks the juice but leaves the meat. She cuts her lip on the can and it doesn’t heal and doesn’t heal. She drapes across your bed, staring at the ceiling, and works the cut with her tongue while you do homework. You watch her skeleton emerge like a time-lapse video of decay. One day she passes out on her way back from the lunch line and breaks her collarbone against the corner of a…

“I’m so exhausted,” Blake Brockington wrote before walking into traffic on Interstate 485 on March 23, 2015.

Blake was a handsome young man. He had been crowned homecoming king and had spoken about his trials and triumphs on the national stage. Blake was also transgender.

“When you’re a kid, parents always tell you sticks and stones may break your bones but names will never hurt you. To me that’s not true. Words hurt, and words turn up to threats and threats turn up to physical violence.” Taylor Alesana, like many transgender teens, was made to feel uncomfortable at school and in society. She spoke about it on her popular YouTube channel before taking her life on April 2, 2015, just days after Blake.

Carrots

I love it when the wise and educated will inform us that eating fresh veggies will reduce the risk of cancer…duh!!  That’s because everything else we eat that is filled with chemicals and man-made synthetics increases the risk of cancer!  (Especially in the U.S.)  We finally have some carrots coming up and we got these fun, colorful ones.  Can’t wait to harvest them.  Cool weather root vegetables are packed with the vitamins and nutrients that our bodies are needing and craving after a long winter without them.  Just in case you were wondering.

US govt-funded agency admits marijuana can kill cancer cells

Yahoo

Chronnoisseur's avatar

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, a US federal government research institute whose mission includes “bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction,” has officially admitted that marijuana extracts can kill cancer cells.

The institute has revised a page on itswebsiteentitled “DrugFacts: Is Marijuana Medicine?” citing a recent study conducted by a group of scientists at St. George’s University, London.

“Recent animal studies have shown that marijuana extracts may help kill certain cancer cells and reduce the size of others,”
the NIDA report stated, adding that evidence from“one cell culture study suggests that purified extracts from whole-plant marijuana can slow the growth of cancer cells from one of the most serious types of brain tumors.”

The study, published in the Molecular Cancer Therapeutics journal in November, discovered that cannabis helps “dramatically reduce” the growth of new brain cancer cells.

Day 825: Seeing the light

My thoughts exactly. Large stinky men in costume scare me too. I wish I had written this. 🙂

Ann Koplow's avatarThe Year(s) of Living Non-Judgmentally

Yesterday, I expected to see the rain, because of the weather report. Not uncommonly around here, the weather report was wrong and, instead, I saw the light.

Yesterday, I forgot my cell phone when I went out into the light to meet my childhood-through-present-day friend Barbara for brunch, so no photos of that wonderful meeting will see the light.

During my time with Barbara yesterday, we talked about many things — from the light to the heavy — including:

  • memories from our childhood,
  • medical issues,
  • coping strategies,
  • many people we’ve loved over the years,  including our parents,
  • this blog,
  • how to do better accepting the light of other people’s praise and positive feedback, and
  • vacation getaways, including this one:

I told Barbara how, during some dark days I was having last week, that video of the Underwater Room in Africa had lightened my mood.

Talking to Barbara for hours yesterday…

The Best Definitions from Ambrose Bierce’s ‘Devil’s Dictionary’

Very funny adaptation, not mine

InterestingLiterature's avatarInteresting Literature

The funniest and wittiest quotes from Ambrose Bierce’s comic masterpiece, The Devil’s Dictionary

We’ve read the whole of Ambrose Bierce’s wonderful The Devil’s Dictionary and, below, have distilled the book into 25 of the very best entries in this classic lexicon. The only stipulation we set ourselves was that the quotes we selected had to be short and pithy – preferably no longer than one sentence – to ensure maximum quotability. We hope you enjoy our selection.

Admiration,n. Our polite recognition of another’s resemblance to ourselves.

Barometer,n. An ingenious instrument which indicates what kind of weather we are having.

Clairvoyant,n. A person, commonly a woman, who has the power of seeing that which is invisible to her patron – namely, that he is a blockhead.

Comfort,n. A state of mind produced by contemplation of a neighbor’s uneasiness.

Consult, v. To seek another’s approval of a…

I have had requests to put up my prizewinning watercolor up again. In 2013, it won me a finalist position in The Artist Magazines annual competition. It is for sale, still. As is in frame, $500 or make me an offer of trade. For instance, I need an ancient 4Runner, 4wd. Just putting it out here.

Tom McCobb painting in our Tuesday painting day. Watercolor. Very small, maybe five by eight

Monday afternoon

some sun today, cannot get used to time change

Here’s a postcard I painted in Santa Fe. The original was lost. The skies are wonderful out there

Tired

I have been having relentless fatigue. One painting this week.

On the other hand, we can see the ground in several places.

The sun is out.

I need a nap, or a big push

Yesterday, edited a bit. “Hurry, Spring”

I did this watercolor yesterday and then brought it into Procreate app on iPad to see what I need.

Suggestions welcome

Tuesday and I paint with

the Tuesday regulars. This one is the result of an ink spill and some paint throwing. I have no idea how to finish it. Would love comments and suggestions

Thanks

“Whatever the conditions of people’s lives, wherever they live, however they live, they share the same hopes, the same dreams, as you and I”. -Melinda Gates

Today, March 8th is one of my favorite day’s of the year because it is a day that honors women around the world. It is International Women’s Day.

I think of all the progress we’ve made over the last few decades yet remember all of the challenges that remain ahead. Too many woman still die during childbirth. Too many women are victims of sexual violence and exploitation. Too many women do not have the opportunity to live up to their potential due to lack of education, status and rights. It is such a pity given that there is so much potential to make the world a better place for all if we just include women and girls.

Rather than dwell on the sometimes…
