opening day
in here it’s changeable
Around here, Central New York or upstate as anyone from NYC calls it, the weather changes way fast.
I screamed on waking to see the the snow all over. Dana (my beloved husband) laughed downstairs.
It snowed about an inch very fast. Brief sun gave Dana a chance to hold our iPad out the door to catch the shot above.
Now it snows again, sigh.
Back to the studio to paint some sun.

An open letter to Pope Francis…
Dear Pope Francis,
My name is Bro. Brian Zampier. I am a Marianist brother and artist. For the past 10 years I have been an assitant to a wonderful Marianist artist — Bro. Mel Meyer — who died on October 12 (the Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar) at the age of 85.
For Bro. Mel’s obituary in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, click here.
For a wonderful article about Bro. Mel by Rev. Travis Scholl, click here.
I am writing you to show you one of Bro. Mel’s recent works — his “Pope Francis Chair”…

We are saving it at Marianist Galleries in St. Louis, Missouri so you may sit in it when you visit the United States!
Know of my prayers for you.
Check out today’s posting on the “abz paperless sketchbook journal”…

Day one, really wet paint, oops
this — day one — is what I meant to put up first. Wet watercolor on masa paper previously bonded with matte acrylic medium. The masa paper had been a dump from my palette. So there were colors there already.
I am tiptoeing toward Golden Acrylics, our neighbors to the south in Berlin (?) NY. The mediums and texturizing the paint are what I crave with watercolors.
But I digress, DaVinci watercolors hansa yellow, Winsor and Newton rose madder genuine, a few Inktense pencils and few Stabilo watercolor crayons. Thank you for reading.

I’m a finalist!
This painting: flower fodder for the birds won me a finalist position in the Artist’s Magazine annual contest. Another member of the Cazenovia Watercolor Society, Denise Athanas won the grand prize and a finalist position in the same contest. Denise left cold upstate NY to be warm in SC, where she continues produce wondrous, brilliant works.
thanks for reading,
Martha

It takes a special cup to deliver my morning coffee
mark states well how the importance of that first cup
The break-up came while I was standing at the kitchen sink, hands submerged in hot, soapy water.
It was totally unexpected. I could not believe what I heard.
I’d thought our relationship was perfect these last few years. First thing every morning, she made me smile. She smelled fantastic. She felt great in my hands.
It was to be no more. I’d have to start my days with a new amor.
The handle had broken off my favorite ceramic coffee cup. I thought she was perfect. Big enough to allow me enough java for my daily sit down to write this blog. Heavy enough to offer continued warmth and comfort. Plain and simple, tall and beige, handle big enough to enclose my stubby fingers.
Gone in a sickening crack. Split in two.
Now our matching husband-and-wife pair of coffee mugs was down to one. Whoever got up first had first…

Day 2: 26 October 2013… Dayton, Ohio to Hamburg, NY
Here I had the chance to meet up with Tony Rozak, a professor in Communications Design who I had way back from 1975-77 at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He gave me a tour of the Amhurst campus art department. Things have changed a bit. Sorry I ended up not taking any pics.
Day 3: 27 October 3013… Hamburg, NY to New Hartford, NY
On the way, I had to stop at one of my favorite Finger Lake towns — Skaneateles, NY…

I also stopped by Morrisville, NY to catch up with Marth Keim-St. Louis and her husband, Dana. Martha and I worked at Steffen Publishing Company in Holland Patent, NY in the late 70s.
